Last September 17, Jay Angelo Pineda, a 2nd year Information Technology student of FEU Diliman, made it to the final five of the Google Web Rangers, which was held at the Green Sun Hotel in Makati.
The whole day event showcased the Web Rangers Workshop for the participants to collaborate and create ideas to highlight digital literacy. Aside from the workshop, guests were invited to give talks and advices.
Web Rangers, a community created by Google, is composed of people who are dedicated to spread digital literacy to everyone who uses the Internet. It is a competition aiming to explore the abilities of the netizens on how they are able to meaningfully use the Internet to help them pursue their passion, hone their talents and skills or acquire new knowledge.
Pineda noted that the Google Web Rangers is similar to becoming a Google Student Ambassador wherein its main goal is encouraging young Filipinos to know the proper use of the Internet and making it a better place.
Google Web Rangers was introduced by Mr. Janno Reyes, a SITE adviser, Pineda grabbed the opportunity to enter the community and experience what Google has to offer.
Pineda was one of the 400 aspirants who applied within Metro Manila which were divided into groups to create a campaign supporting Digital Literacy in the Philippines. Out of the 400, he was one of the lucky students who got chosen to continue to the next round.
Pineda was then grouped with people whom he has not yet met before. All of them had one goal in mind, which is to “do something about digital literacy. Pineda and his group mates were one of the five teams that had an outstanding Digital Literacy Campaign and was awarded last October 12 at Whitespace Manila in Makati.
Pineda vowed to continue the Google Web Rangers’ mission and promote the benefits of using the Internet. He also noted that he will strive to “be brave” as he continue his adventurous ride with Google Philippines.
